Currently there are 106 named species of peacock spider, all in the genus Maratus. Except 16 species (Maratus nemo, Maratus pinniger, Maratus candens, Maratus nubilis, Maratus expolitus, Maratus ammophilus, Maratus playa, Maratus nambung, Maratus yanchep, Maratus miles, Maratus lynx, Maratus hakea, Maratus astarte, Maratus manjimup, Maratus kwenda and Maratus nannup) you will find them all in the catalogue David Hill and I have produced and almost all of them are also featured on this website. The count of 107 named Maratus species does not include 10 taxa that have been formally added to Maratus but whose affinity we are uncertain about. It also does not include the species Maratus licunxini that was later synonymised under Maratus fimbriatus, and the count also exclude a taxon currently considered a subspecies (Maratus melindae corus). All confirmed Maratus species live in Australia. One of these (Maratus griseus) also occurs in New Zealand and may have been introduced there by humans. Maratus furvus was described from China, but the description of this spider lacks detail and almost certainly is of a spider that should be assigned to another genus.
